How to Trust Your Intuition: 7 Ways to Tell Intuition From Anxiety and Overthinking

Have you ever had a strong feeling about a person or situation and then immediately wondered, is this my intuition, or am I just overthinking? You are definitely not alone. Learning how to trust your intuition is less about becoming certain of every feeling and more about recognising your own patterns, slowing down and giving yourself enough space to tell a quiet inner knowing from fear, hope or mental noise.

Intuition is one of the subjects I am asked about most often. People expect it to arrive like a dramatic psychic announcement, but in everyday life it can be much subtler than that. It might be a small sense that something is worth exploring, a feeling that a situation is not quite right, or an idea that keeps returning even after the emotion around it has settled.

Here are seven grounded ways to begin strengthening that relationship with yourself.

1. Notice how the feeling arrives

One useful distinction is the way a thought enters your awareness. Intuitive impressions often feel relatively simple: a short thought, image, bodily feeling or sense of knowing. Overthinking tends to build a whole story around the original thought.

For example, intuition might feel like, I don't think this opportunity is right for me. Anxiety may then add: What if I turn it down and regret it? What if nothing else comes along? What if everyone thinks I've made the wrong choice?

The first quiet impression and the ten thoughts that follow it are not necessarily the same thing.

2. Give strong emotions time to settle

When you desperately want an answer, it becomes much harder to separate intuition from expectation. The same is true when you are frightened, angry or hurt.

You do not have to make every decision at the exact moment a feeling appears. Unless something genuinely requires immediate action, give yourself some space. Sleep on it. Go for a walk. Journal. Come back to the question when your nervous system feels calmer.

Sometimes the clearest sign is what remains after the emotional intensity has passed.

3. Ask a better question

Instead of repeatedly asking, What is going to happen?, try asking questions that leave room for your own agency.

What am I noticing that I have been ignoring? What choice feels most aligned with my values? What information am I missing? Am I drawn towards this because it feels right, or because I need a particular outcome?

This is also how I prefer to approach psychic and email readings. A reading can offer another perspective, but good spiritual guidance should help you understand your choices rather than make you feel powerless without it.

4. Keep an intuition journal

If you want to know whether your intuition is reliable, start recording it before you know the outcome.

Write down the date, the situation, your first impression and how strongly you felt it. Then return later and note what actually happened. This is far more useful than relying on memory, because hindsight can make us remember a vague feeling as much more definite than it really was.

After a few weeks or months, patterns often become easier to see. You may notice that your clearest instincts arrive in a particular way, while fear has a completely different signature.

5. Learn your body's signals without treating every sensation as a message

Some people experience intuition physically: a relaxed sense of certainty, a sudden heaviness, goosebumps or a feeling in the stomach. Those sensations can be meaningful to you, but context matters.

Our bodies also respond to stress, tiredness, excitement and ordinary emotion. The aim is not to label every flutter as a spiritual sign. It is to become curious about recurring patterns.

Grounding practices can be particularly useful here because they bring attention back to the present moment. If you enjoy energy-focused practices, you can explore the Healing section for more about the approach I use at Veil and Violet.

6. Practise with low-stakes choices

Building intuition is much easier when you are not beginning with the biggest decision of your life.

Try noticing small preferences without immediately explaining them away. Which route do you feel like taking? Which book are you drawn to? Which card catches your attention first? What person suddenly comes to mind?

You can also use tarot or oracle cards as reflective prompts rather than treating them as commands. Before turning a card over, notice what you already think or feel about the question. Then ask what the imagery brings to mind.

The Free Readings page is another easy place to explore spiritual reflection without needing to book anything.

7. Remember that intuition does not remove free will

This is perhaps the most important part.

An intuitive feeling is information, not an instruction you must obey. You are still allowed to gather facts, change your mind, ask for advice and make the decision that feels healthiest for you.

Spirituality should expand your relationship with yourself, not make you frightened of getting a sign wrong.

Intuition vs anxiety: what is the difference?

There is no perfect formula, and people experience both differently. As a general reflection tool, however, intuition often feels concise and relatively steady, while anxiety is more likely to loop, demand certainty and generate multiple frightening possibilities.

That does not mean a calm thought is automatically psychic or an anxious thought is automatically meaningless. If something concerns your health, safety, finances or another serious real-world matter, use practical evidence and appropriate professional advice alongside your feelings.

Can psychic readings help you develop intuition?

They can be useful as a reflective tool when they encourage you to think rather than simply telling you what to do. One thing I love about readings is that sometimes a client hears something and immediately knows which part resonates. That reaction itself can reveal what they already sensed underneath the noise.

If you feel stuck around love, direction, a decision or what may be developing around you, you can explore the current Email Readings at Veil and Violet. My approach is centred on insight, honesty and free will rather than frightening predictions or guaranteed outcomes.

A simple five-minute intuition exercise

Find somewhere quiet and choose one question that is not urgent. Take a few slow breaths and write the question at the top of a page.

Without trying to produce a psychic answer, write the first three words, feelings or images that come to mind. Do not analyse them yet. Then ask yourself: What do I already know about this situation from the facts? Finally ask: What do I feel drawn to do next?

Leave the page alone for a while and return to it later. You may be surprised by how different the first quiet response looks compared with everything your mind added afterwards.

Trust grows through experience

You do not need to force yourself to become more intuitive. Start by becoming more observant.

Notice what your inner voice feels like when you are calm. Keep a record. Question your assumptions. Stay open without surrendering your common sense. The goal is not to predict every twist in life; it is to know yourself well enough that when something genuinely feels important, you are able to listen.

And if you want a little outside perspective while still keeping your choices firmly in your own hands, you can browse my Email Readings or spend some time with the free spiritual readings first.
